In January 2013 I wrote "Inextricable" and embarked on the project of making a 1940's film noir. I found actors Katy Crosslin and Colin Gray to act in the movie. They were great! We were able to complete 3 scenes. Unfortunately the film was not finished due to technical issues. Below I have combined the screenplay with the 3 filmed scenes (links to them).
Reasons I could not finish the film: my camera records a grainy effect even when I had a very intense light shining through the darkness. My video editor also causes increased graininess and decreased quality each time I put video in it. The video editor tends to not let me open files that I had spent hours editing and then destroys it while I would try to open it. If anyone out there can help me smooth out the grainy issue, please let me know.
I hope you enjoy the story! :) :) :)

<--- This photo was going to be in the beginning while the credits were showing and creepy accordion music was playing. My vision for the movie was: wintery, dark, dramatic, moody, and authentic 1940's with attention to detail.

Scene 1:
Takes place at the park at the bottom of skinner’s butte. By the river. At daylight/late afternoon.
Murderer Irving (wearing long tan coat/fedora) is shown coming up the bank (from edge of river) through the trees (camera is facing towards him) with a bloody knife. He is wearing gloves. As he comes up the bank he looks both ways to make sure no one is on the path. Then he runs off.
Camera shows a close up of my hand writing on a paper and a voice-over reading it: “My Story. A True One by Cora Hepner."
"It was a late afternoon on friday….”
Voice over continues into scene 1: “I was walking home from work through the park as I normally do, just thinking about my day. I was a switchboard operator at the time at the water plant. [camera next shows me curious/ in wonder] I started to come upon something very curious. [camera then shows blood on pavement and me walking off the path to investigate] That is when it all started.”
Scene 1 written without voiceover: I (Cora) (wearing floral dress/velvet coat/wide brimmed hat) come walking down the path (showing me at a distance at first). Then I approach and notice blood on the cement. I look around and then look down the bank, and then hop down and see the dead woman (shows close up shocked look on my face- low angle camera shot so my face isn’t hidden by hat). Camera only shows the legs of the woman lieing there. Then I come up the bank calling for help and clearly very upset and emotional. Then a woman (second main character) Leona (wearing skirt/blouse/grey coat/tan hat) comes (from seemingly out of nowhere) and says she’ll go get help. I tell her the woman who died was my co-worker Agnes. she runs off to get help. I’m left standing there vulnerable like I don’t know what to do.
Scene 2: As I (wearing floral dress/velvet coat/wide rimmed hat) walk into my apt the phone is ringing. (I am holding a hanky and and still upset). I answer the phone. It’s a police man calling me because he wants me to come in for questioning. I explain over the phone that Agnes was my co-worker at my switchboard operator job and we walk the same path home from work everyday. But he still insists that I come in which kinda bothers me. Just because I don’t want to. I walk towards the door and leave.
Scene 3: Camera shows me (wearing floral dress/velvet coat/wide brimmed hat) walking away from the police station at night.
Scene 4: Next day (Saturday). Location: 17th street- 1940's looking neighborhood. I (wearing skirt/blouse/velvet coat/wide brimmed hat) am going for a walk along the sidewalk in town (it’s my day off work) and just happen to run into Leona again (wearing casual dress/gray coat)/tan hat). I wave, get her attention.
Leona says, “Hi…… Funny running into you here.”
I say, “Ya it is… *awkward pause/gap* I was just taking a walk.”
Leona says, “Me too. I just live…(describes where).” She seems caring and asks with concern, “How are you doing?”
I tell her, “I’m alright. I didn’t get much sleep last night. I don’t know if I told you but she was my co-worker. Her name was Agnes. I just keep thinking… why would anyone hurt Agnes (showing being upset).” I tell her that the police phoned and questioned me and I tell her that there had been some arguments with Agnes but we loved eachother and I would never hurt her.
Leona looks caring/of concern and says in a kind tone, “I have a feeling it’s going to be ok.”
I say, “Thanks for going to get the cops yesterday when I was in shock. *pause* What is your name?
Leona says her name. then I say my name and where I live.
*long pause of silence between us*
I say, “We’ll, I guess should be heading on my way now, finish my walk. But it was nice running into you.”
Leona say, “Ya, you too. Well, have a good day.
I say, “You too.”
Camera stays in same position as I step ahead and Leona walks ahead as camera shows her walking off into the distance. Scene 5: http://youtu.be/EmuepdR8D-U
Scene 6: Same day (Sunday). Location: across the street from Acorn Park, using 1940's style house with white picket fence as backdrop… I (wearing floral dress/blazer/wide brimmed hat) run into Leona (wearing skirt/blouse/tan hat/gray coat) again while going for a walk. Hmmm… interesting we run into eachother the next day again. We both stop and say hi how are you?
I say, “I guess we go for walks at the same time.”
Leona says, “Ya. I was just spending so much time sitting and writing I felt like I needed to get out of the house.”
I say, “Oh you write? What kind of writing do you do?”
Leona, “Poetry.”
I say, “Oh (intrigued). I like writing short stories.”
She says, “Oh (intrigued).”
I say, “Ya, it’s nice to escape into another place isn’t it.”
Leona says in a sad tone, “Ya.” reflecting on her life as she gazes off to the side.
I look at her noticing her change. Then I catch sight of something. “Oh (excitedly). I just saw the most beautiful dog being walked by a bicyclist- a pit bull.”
Leona says, “Oh. I used to have a pit bull when I was a kid. He was a great dog. I miss having one.”
I say, “Me too. I can’t have one where I live.”
I say, “I like your hat.”
Leona says, “Thank you…. I got it from Sears.”
Would you like to walk with me?”
I say, “Sure!”
Camera shows us walking off into the distance talking.
later on our walk... I say, “I like nice quiet Sundays like this. Not much traffic.”
Later Camera shows us walking together at another location in the distance chatting and having a nice time. We really hit it off. We walk towards the camera and then stop- at a cross road.
I say, “We’ll I should be heading on my way now. It was good talking to you. Leona says, “you too.” I say, “Would you like to come over for tea tomorrow at 6?”
Leona stops to think and says, “Ya I can do that. I’d love to.”
Scene 7: http://youtu.be/Z2aT3JpqsT4
Scene 8: one night I’m walking downtown (wearing skirt/blouse/blazer/wide rimmed hat) holding my shopping bags full of things. And I get the sense someone is following me. I look back and (long distance shot from my view) a silouette of a man (Colin wearing his gray peacoat/fedora) in the distance. Cannot see face. I go around a building to try to get off track. Camera switches from showing me to showing this: There is a large square building, solid wall and showing the man’s side profile and large shadowing as he’s walking slowely but intently. I am not in view in this scene. You cannot see his face.
Camera goes back to me looking creeped as I look behind me. I start walking again.
I come around a corner. I walk fast to get away from the situation.
Scene 9: I (wearing skirt/blouse/blazer/wide brimmed hat) walk in my front door and put coat and hat on hat rack. Camera shows full outfit. I walk over to the phone and call Leona and tell her that I had the feeling someone was following me and I couldn’t see his face. I elaborate on this. “On a more pleasant note”… I ask her if she wants to go to a club the next day to go dancing and hear the band. Leona says yes. I say, “I’ll wear my best dress!”
Scene 10: Shows Leona and I walking downtown in our glamourous dresses (Leona with blue velvety hat/ I wearing tan hat with beads & mesh) in a cheerful mood. “That was such a fabulous show. I think that’s the first time I’ve seen a female band there.” *Can elaborate on conversation.* I stop Leona…. infront of a building and I say, “There’s something I really want to tell you. (nervous pause). I get the feeling you may feel the same way. I tell her that I’m in love with her. Then Leona says, “Of course I feel the same way. I was hoping you’d eventually pick up on that! By the way I’ve been acting (or “I’m glad my subtleness came through.”) Then camera does a close up of us taking eachothers hand. The camera then moves onto focusing on the silhouettes on the wall of us and we “kiss”. But not really in real life.lol. Chemistry is very important in this scene. I thought this theme would be nice since back in the 40’s it was not allowed in films.
Scene 11: Location: Hyrons and Safeway. It’s important to me that no modern cars are in the shots and no people dressed modern (this may be tricky but with many takes we can get it right). I am standing behind the bars at Hyrons patio and the camera is a close up of my face as I look between the bars. My face is suspenseful as if I’m thinking, “OH NO!” Next shot the camera is farther back and I say, “Oh my gosh that cat almost got hit by a car!” and I look around wondering if someone heard me even though I said it to myself. Next shot I’m walking from Hyrons towards the grocery store (wearing floral dress/velvet jacket/small black velvet hat/watch) (camera ahead of me) when all the sudden I notice (I stop right infront of camera with a shocked/heartbroken look on my face) Leona (wearing skirt/blouse/tan hat/gray coat) with a man ahead (Colin wearing long tan coat/fedora)- they have a grocery cart infront of them. They are stopped and looking at eachother like they are saying something. Irving puts his elbow out as if to tell Leona to put her arm around his. So she does. The camera shows the look of shock on my face. I turn and leave. Camera then shows them infront of shelves of canned food and Leona says, “Can we buy ingredients for a pizza? I haven’t made one since we got married…..(thinking)…. 6 months ago.” Irving says gruffly, “We’ll check the prices.”
Scene 12: Camera shows Leona (wearing skirt/blouse) and Irving at their house- evening/dark out. Irving asks Leona, “How’s it going with that dame Cora?” Camera focuses on Leona in an eerie light (small lamp on the table) and evil look on her face… replies slowely, “I’ve got her wrapped around my finger.” He says, “Good” and walks around corner into kitchen. Leona does something… maybe with a cigarette… something to use up time. And then you hear Irving hollor, “Dammit! Why do you leave this ink bottle open! It just spilled all over the place!” Leona gets irritated and says, “I’m outta here. I’m goin for a walk!” She gets up and grabs her tan hat and gray coat and walks towards the door. Camera is placed outside to show her walking away from her house while putting on coat and hat (to use up time, so that Irving has time to clean up the mess). Camera then shows kitchen table area and shows Irving coming around the corner and back into the dining area. He sits down in a irritable mood. He looks at his bills sitting on the table. He suddenly gets upset. He says, “Damnit I can’t afford these electric bills! She keeps the lights on all the time. I don’t know why I keep that stupid dame around…. I should just get rid of her.” He pauses and thinks. Gets an idea. Says slowely, “I know what I’ll do….”
Scene 13: evening. Shows me (in floral dress/with watch) on my couch clearly upset holding my hankerchief. Low key lighting. I get up and go into the hallway and dissapear from view. *possibly put light behind me in kitchen while I face camera, to give an eerie silhouette around my head and shoulders* Doorbell rings. Camera is still in living room but closer to the door pointed towards the hallway. You see my shadow appear first and then I come around the corner into the living room. Shows look on my face as I wonder if it’s Leona. I open the door. Leona (wearing skirt/blouse/tan hat/gray coat) reaches in her pocket and grabs paper, “I brought a poem I wrote.” {or maybe an object that raises curiosity instead} Camera shows upset look on my face. (shows she’s surprised that I’m upset) “What’s wrong?” And she steps inside and I back away. She steps forward, so now we are into the light. Low angle shot at our faces while we talk. I confront her telling her angrily I saw her with her man. "How could you lie to me? Who are you!? I don't even know who you are!" Etc. etc. . “Get out!” Leona looks shocked to find out Cora saw her husband! Afraid of saying anything she turns around towards/facing the door. Camera shows my face partially shadowed with an evil look on my face. Then on the wall you see the silouette of her falling and you hear her scream as she falls] Then camera shows Leona on the ground. Camera shows me walk up beside her and look angry.
Camera jumps to showing Irving (wearing gray peacoat/fedora) walking outside along the sidewalk at an unknown location under a street light (dutch tilt camera angle)…. Who knows where he is coming from or where he is going to. Camera jumps back to me showing that I’m angry and I storm towards the door, quickly grabbing my purse, blazer, and hat (stacked by the door) before I exit. After I exit I pause, almost as if I’m wondering what I’m doing. And then I notice an envelope by my door with a note inside. It says, “Meet me at one of the lamp posts by the playground at Griffin Park at 8 and bring me ALL your cash and NO COPS. If you don’t come I will make sure that the cops know you killed your co-worker.” I look alarmed at the note. I walk off.
Camera shows me walking towards a convenient store door. Later I’m shown sitting on the curb infront of the store looking at my watch. Scene 14: http://youtu.be/-D--qDRZ4Ic
Scene 15: Camera shows me walking back into my apartment (in floral dress/blazer/wide brimmed hat). Camera scans room. No one is there. I sit on the couch feeling terrified, and betrayed by Leona.
Scene 16: Irving walks in the door of his home (wearing gray peacoat) (camera is inside) and hollors “Hey I just got a bunch of dough from Cora!! This will cover the electric bill!” Leona is not in view- Camera stays on Irving.
Scene 17: Back at my apt. Dim lighting. Still nervously sitting on the couch (in floral dress). I get up and turn light on, pick up a bottle of pills (on table near by) and take one with water. Camera focuses on piece of paper sitting on table. It says, “From Felix Hodgsen, Ph. D. Prescription: Take 1 Veronal pill when feelings of anxiety come on.” I sit back on the couch, nervous and upset. Doorbell rings. Subtle surprise and suspense is on my face as my eyes move in the direction of the door. I cautiously and quietly get up and go look out the peep hole. Leona (wearing skirt/blouse/tan hat/gray coat) yells, “It’s me Leona! I just went to a pay phone and called the cops! They came and got my husband Irving! I can prove it to you. Please open the door.” I look out the window to make sure no one else is around. Then I unlock the door and peep through the crack. [When Leona professes she is on the verge of frantic but not quite, -dramatic/ upset- because she just turned in her husband and now she wants Cora back] Leona says, “Irving was the one who killed Agnes! When we were walking through the park I had no idea he was planning to kill someone! I had no part in it. I’ve been scared of him. When I got married I didn’t know he was going to turn out to be a murderer! I don’t love him. I love you! I choose you. I wanted to protect you from him. I couldn’t stand it that he set you up and stole from you. Do you see I love you?”
Cora replies, “How are you going to prove to me he is in jail?”
Leona says, “Call the police station and ask them if Irving Bradshaw is there.” I say, “OK. But stay out here.” I get on the phone and I say, “Operator please get me through to the police station.”.... “Could you tell me if Irving Bradshaw is there?” Long wait while the lady looks through the papers to see if he is there. Then she answers yes. I say, “thank you very much.” I smile and look relieved. He is there. I walk over to the door and tell Leona he is there and I let her in. Leona walks in and says, “I understand why you got upset earlier. Oh Cora please forgive me.”
I smile and say, “I forgive you Leona”. And then we hug passionately (of course in classic movie style ;)
After they hug, Leona rubs her own wrist and says, “oh my wrist still hurts after tripping earlier on your music stand.”. And then they smile at each other and I say, “I’m sorry about that. I should of moved it.”…
Scene 18:
Screen says: 6 months later…
Then the camera shows Leona (wearing casual dress/no coat/tan hat) and Cora (wearing blouse/skirt/no blazer/wide rimmed hat) walking down the street with a pit bull (my dog Kiddo). We stop infront of the camera and Leona pets Kiddo and says, “He is such a great dog. I can’t believe his owner didn’t pick him up from the pound.” I say, “Ya. Though he got really lucky that he gets to live with us.” Leona says, “I love him so much already.”
I smile. “I know. I loved the poem you wrote about him. You should share that one at the poetry group you just joined.”
We smile at each other and then pet Kiddo more as “THE END” appears across the screen.
Then a black screen appears with writing:

Katy Crosslin….Leona Bradshaw
